Fighting Through Life

The intersection of martial arts, philosophy, and disability

The Eighth Wonder of the World

Like you, I’m afraid…

I’m afraid of watching a loved one die, I’m afraid of living a life that was meaningless, I’m terrified of never achieving anything of note. There are many things in this world that could easily spiral me into a sense of despair and fear if I’m not careful. If you feel similarly, know that you’re not alone.

In my life, I often feel as if I’m treading water, stranded in the ocean, with no sight of land.

Despite this, I swim.

Aimlessly kicking my hands and feet.

Constantly moving.

Maybe not always forward, as I have no compass to know.

Yet trusting in my heart the promise of land.

Not because I want to, but because I have to.

Otherwise, I will certainly drown.

Deciding to Swim

In my opinion, the most challenging part of anyone’s journey with martial arts, or anything else for that matter, is making their first decision. To conclude that they’re fed up with treading water and start swimming.

Beginning any task, especially ones as daunting as swimming in an open ocean, is necessary to the human experience. Overcoming your fears is required to reach even a fraction of greatness. Whatever this opportunity is for you, I encourage you to jump in with both feet, failing is never fatal, but stagnation certainly can be.

Much like Warren Buffets eighth wonder of the world, life values compounding interest. Each day is an opportunity to build upon yourself, whether my movement pushes me forward or changes the direction I’m heading, I trust that this endeavor is positive. I am not devoid of fear, I know there is a possibility I could be moving backwards, learn to accept it with grace and humility when it does.

Begin your journey now, life does not reward the watchers, it rewards the doers…

A lovely example of a risk that I took has been learning to accept love into my life, and to give it freely without fear. This has been one of the best experiences in my life, because of Heidi, I am learning just how rewarding love is. This picture was taken the day we moved her all the way from Ohio and into our first home together in Colorado, a memory I will cherish forever.
